Araf 142-143

142- AND WE GAVE MOSES AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET US FOR THIRTY DAYS, AND WE COMPLETED THEM WITH TEN MORE WHICH MADE-UP OUR TIME WITH HIM FORTY NIGHTS.  AND HE SAID TO HIS BROTHER (AARON): “TAKE CHARGE OF MY PEOPLE AFTER ME, BE GOOD TO THEM AND DO NOT FOLLOW THE WAYS OF THE MISCHIEF MAKERS. 

143- AND WHEN HE CAME TO OUR APPOINTMENT AND HIS LORD SPOKE TO HIM, HE SAID: “MY LORD, LET ME SEE TO LOOK AT YOU”.  HE (ALLAH) SAID: “YOU WILL NOT SEE ME, BUT LOOK AT THE MOUNTAIN, IF IT SETTLES IN ITS PLACE, THEN YOU WILL SEE ME.  WHEN HIS LORD MANIFESTED HIMSELF TO THE MOUNTAIN, HE TURNED IT INTO RUBBLE AND MOSES FELL, UNCONSCIOUS.  WHEN HE RECOVERED HE SAID: “PRAISE IS TO YOU, I REPENT TO YOU AND I AM THE FIRST OF THE MUSLIMS (SUBMITTERS)

Allah the Highest, gave Moses, peace upon him, a time to meet with him, which was thirty nights, and then ten were added to make it up to forty.  Allah the Highest said in Sorah Al-Baqarah: “AS WE APPOINTED FORTY DAYS FOR  MUSA (MOSES) APPOINTMENT, THEN YOU TOOK UP THE WORSHIP OF THE CALF IN HIS ABSENCE, THEN YOU WERE EVIL DOERS”.  (S: 2 A:51)

Allah the Highest spoke to Moses during that time, and gave him the tablets with the Ten Commandments, written on them by engraving.  

Before Moses departed, he spoke to his brother Aaron who was also a prophet, but it is clear that Moses was the senior one of the two, and the appointment was given to Moses only.  Moses left Aaron in Charge in his place, and warned him about the mischief makers who would be active in Moses absence.  Also, the mischief makers used to fear Moses more than Aaron.

The person who takes charge of someone else’s responsibility should do his best to keep things the way they have been, so that the original keeper should find the things as they left them.

Allah the Highest spoke to Moses, but without Moses being able to see Him, for no human being can speak to Allah the Highest except as a revelation or from behind a shield.  Allah the Highest said: “ALLAH DOES NOT SPEAK TO A HUMAN EXCEPT AS A REVELATION OR FROM BEHIND A SHIELD, OR SENDING A MESSENGER TO REVEAL TO HIM WITH HIS PERMISSION WHAT HE WILLS. FOR ALLAH IS SUPREME AND MOST WISE”.  (S:42 A:51)

Mohamed, prayer and peace upon, him spoke to Allah the Highest when He went up to meet Him in Mirage, but Allah the Highest was shielded from Mohamed’s sight by a shield of light.  Moses, peace upon him, wanted to see Allah the Highest as well, and he knew he could not with his human sight, therefore he asked Allah the Highest to let him look to see, therefore, he asked Allah the Highest to give him the ability to look at him “MY LORD, LET ME SEE TO LOOK AT YOU”.

Allah the Highest, decided to show Moses practically, that his human nature could not tolerate seeing Allah the Highest.   He told Moses to look at a mountain, and then Allah the Highest manifested himself to the mountain, which turned the mountain into rubble.  Moses, peace upon him, was in shock from what he saw, and fell down unconscious.  Allah the Highest, demonstrated to Moses that as the huge mountain of rocks and stones, broke in to pieces when Allah Manifested himself to it, then his flesh and blood could not have tolerated the same sight either. 

When Moses recovered, he regretted asking and he repented, and stated that he is in the forefront of those who submit to the will of Allah, and obey Him.
