Araf 150-151

150- WHEN MOSES RETURNED TO HIS PEOPLE ANGRY AND SADDENED, HE SAID: “EVIL IS WHAT YOU DID IN MY ABSENCE, WAS I TOO LATE RETURNING?”  HE DROPPED THE, PLATES AND TOOK HIS BROTHER BY AND HEAD AND PULLED HIS BROTHER TO HIM, HE (AARON SAID): “MY MOTHER’S SON, PEOPLE OVERCAME ME AND ALMOST KILLED ME, SO DO NOT PLEASE MY ENEMIES, AND DO NOT REGARD ME TO BE AMONG THE TRANSGRESSORS”.

151- HE (MOSES) SAID: “MY LORD, FORGIVE ME AND MY BROTHER AND TAKE US INTO YOUR MERCY FOR YOU ARE THE MOST MERCIFUL”.

Moses peace upon him returned to his people, both angry at what they did, and in the mean time saddened by the great sin they committed.  He also knew that this would not pass without punishment.  It is like a man finding that his son or daughter failed their exams, and that this is because they abused drugs; the emotions are mixed between anger and sadness.  Moses dropped the plates where the commands were written out of his anger.

As Moses left his brother Aaron –who was also a prophet- in charge, he thought that Aaron did not look after his people, and that he let them worship the calf.  He pulled him by the head in anger, but Aaron told him that the Children of Israel did not listen to him and when he tried to stop them, they almost killed him.

We note that Aaron Addressed Moses as “MY MOTHER’S SON”, which means either:

1-    That they were brothers through their mother not the father.  Or

2-    They were full brothers through the father and mother, but saying “my mother’s son” was a way of softening Moses, reminding him of their relationship and that they were in the same mother’s womb and fed by the milk of the same woman.

Aaron, peace upon him, considered those of the Children of Israel who disobeyed him and worshipped the calf to be his enemies, and did not wish them to be pleased by seeing Moses angry with him.

They both knew that Allah the Highest would punish the transgressors of the Children of Israel, and they asked for forgiveness and not to be included with them.  They knew that they could only be saved by Allah’s forgiveness and Mercy.  Mohamed, prayer and peace upon him, said: “No one will be admitted to Paradise because of his deeds alone”, they said: “Not even you Allah’s messenger?” he said: “Not even me, unless Allah embraces me with His Mercy and Bounty”.

When believers know that they are in a situation, which draws Allah’s anger or among people Allah the Highest is angry with, they should ask for Allah’s protection and Mercy.
