Araf 155
155- AND MOSES CHOOSE SEVENTY MEN OF HIS PEOPLE FOR OUR APPOINTMENT, THEN WHEN THEY WERE TAKEN BY THE TREMOR HE SAID: “MY LORD, IF YOU WISHED, YOU COULD HAVE DESTROYED THEM AND MYSELF BEFOREHAND, DO YOU DESTROY US BECAUSE OF WHAT THE FEEBLE MINDED OF US DID, IT IS BUT YOUR TEMPTATION WITH WHICH YOU LEAD WHOM YOU WILL ASTRAY AND GUIDE WHOM YOU WILL, YOU ARE OUR CLOSEST KIN AND ALLY, FORGIVE US AND HAVE MERCY UPON US, FOR YOU ARE THE BEST OF THE FORGIVING.
Allah the Highest, commanded Moses, peace upon him, to meet Him and to bring with him seventy chosen men from the Children of Israel. This step was never taken with another nation, but the Children of Israel were known for their doubt and quick disbelieve. Moses, peace upon him, gathered the men and went to the appointed place, but he was faced with them making a condition for their belief and that was, to see Allah the Highest manifestly “AND AS YOU SAID: “O MOSES, WE WILL NOT BELIEVE IN YOU UNTIL WE SEE ALLAH MANIFESTLY”, THEN YOU WERE STRUCK WITH LIGHTENING WHILE YOU WERE LOOKING * THEN WE REVIVED YOU AFTER YOUR DEATH, SO THAT YOU MAY BE THANKFUL”. (S:2 A:55-56) They were struck dead when they tried to see Allah the Highest. They were taken by a tremor and shock as well as lightening. Moses pleaded to Allah the Highest to forgive them and his pleading included the following: - Not destroy them now, for they could have been destroyed before, and they had deserved it, before and then. - Pleading to Allah the Highest, not to destroy them because of the actions of the fools and feeble minded. - Man is weak and they were faced with temptation from Allah the Highest, and it was hard for them to deal with. This is appealing by the human weakness. - In this situation, the Children of Israel had no ally or anyone to look after them, other than Allah the Highest. Should Allah the Highest abandon them and not forgive them, they would certainly perish. Moses, peace upon him, pleaded to Allah the Highest to forgive his people and to have mercy upon them, despite their serious mistake, and Allah the Highest responded, forgiving them and bringing them back to life.
