Nesae 114

114- THERE IS NO GOODNESS IN MUCH OF THEIR PRIVATE TALK, EXCEPT TO GIVE CHARITY, TO DO GOOD, OR TO MAKE PEACE BETWEEN PEOPLE.  HE WHO DOES THIS SEEKING ALLAH’S PLEASURE, WE WILL GIVE HIS A GREAT REWARD.

In this Ayah Allah the Highest tells us about the importance of our words, which can a rewarded, punished, or of no consequence.

Allah the Highest knows what we do and say, whether it is public or not.  Allah the Highest said: “HE KNOWS WHAT YOU SPEAK PUBLICALLY AND KNOWS WHAT YOU”.  (S: 21 A: 110)

And said: “THERE IS NOT A WORD SPOKEN WHICH IS NOT NOTED BY A VERY KEEN OBSERVER”.  (S: 50 A: 18)

Our spoken words are of serious consequences for us, and for our Hereafter.

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “All which the son of Adam says is against him except, commanding what is right and forbidding what is forbidden and Zekr (remembrance) of Allah”.  (T: Zohd; 62 & Ma: Fetan; 12)

Also Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him says warning us about watching what we say: “A slave of Allah would speak a word, not knowing what it means, and because of it he will be sent to the Hell-Fire”.  (B:Reqaq;23 & M:Zohd;49-50 & T:Zohd;10 & Ma:Kalam;6 & A:5;231)

And said to his companion when he asked: “Is there a thing which throws people down on their faces in the Fire except the yield of their own tongues”.  (Ma: Fetan; 12 & a: 5; 231,226,237)

Therefore, a person’s tongue, man or woman, should be under firm control, for it can cause hurt to others as well as to him.

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “A Muslim is he whom people are safe from both his hand and his tongue”. (B: Eman; 5 & M: Eman; 64, 65 & T: Qiamah; 52)

Therefore, a believer should say only good and righteous things.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Let he who believes in Allah and the Last Day say what is righteous or be silent”.  (B: Reqaq; 23)

A man asked Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him saying: “O Allah’s messenger, who do you fear for me most?”   He held his own tongue and said: “This” (meaning the man’s tongue) (T: Zohd; 60 & Ma: Fetan; 12 & Da: Reqaq; 4 & A: 3; 413)

In fact controlling our tongues is one of the best ways of saving ourselves from the Hell-Fire.  A man asked Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him: “Allah’s messenger, how can we be saved?”  He said: “Take hold of your own tongue, and stay as much as you can in your home, and cry for your own sin”.  (T: Zohd; 60 & D: Malahem; 17 & A: 2; 212 5; 259)

And he said prayer and peace upon him: “Whoever guarantees for me what is between his cheeks, and is between his legs, I guarantee the paradise for him”.  (B: Reqaq; 23 & T: Zohd; 60 & A: 5; 333)

There is a great deal of evil the tongue can do, and many sins it can commit.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him was asked: “Allah’s messenger, teach me a Dawa asking Allah for protection from evil”.  He held his shoulders and said: “Say: Allah, I ask you for your protection from the evil in my hearing, the evil in my vision, the evil in my tongue, the evil in my heart, and the evil in my sperm”.  (T: Dawa; 74 & D: Watr; 32 & N: Esteaza; 4)

Words on the other hand can bring us near to Allah the Highest if it is:

1-    To give charity or encourage others to be charitable.  Charity can be very little, and even a good word or smile is a charity.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Guard yourselves from the fire, even if with half a date (given for charity), and if you do not even have it, then with a good word”.  (B:Adab;33)

He also said prayer and peace upon him: “A kind word is a charity”.  (M: Zakah; 56)

2-    To do good; there are many ways of doing well through the spoken word.

- Zekr: Remembering Allah the Highest.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him used to say: “Allah, I beg you to give me a tongue always doing your Zekr, and a thankful heart”.  (T: Tafseer Sorah; 9, 9 & Ma: Nekah; 5 & A: 5; 278)

- Enjoin what is righteous and forbid what is forbidden:  is a charity.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Every Muslim should give charity”, he was asked: “What if he can not afford it?”  He said: “He should help those in desperate need”, he was asked: “What if he can not?” he said: “To enjoin what is righteous and forbid what is forbidden”.  He was asked: “What if he can not?”  Not to do evil, this is charity.

- To give others sound advise, even if to an unjust ruler:  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “The greatest Jihad is a just word to an unjust ruler”.  (T: Fetan; 13)

Indeed, to give others advice is part of the religion and faith.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon his said: “The religion is the good advice”, they asked to whom: “To Allah, His book, His messenger, and the leaders of the Muslims and the common Muslims”.  (M: Eman; 95)

(To advice Allah, His book and His messenger means that they are the source of the advice to others)

- Change the wrong we see through the spoken word.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “He who sees wrong, he should change it with his hand, if he can not then with his tongue (speaking), if he can not then with the spoken word and this is the weakest faith”.  (T: Fetan; 11 & M: Eman; 78 & N: Eman; 17 & A: 3; 20, 49)

- Spreading peace between people by word.

There is no doubt that word is the best way of spreading peace between people.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “You will not be admitted to Paradise unless you believe, and you will not believe unless you love each other.  Shall I tell you something if you do you will love each other, spread peace between you”?  (M: Eman; 93 & Ma: Moqademah, 9 & Da: Salah; 156 & A: 1; 165)

Indeed it is such a great deed to spread peace that Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Shall I tell you what is better than the Salah, Fasting and Charity?” they said: “Yes Allah’s messenger” he said: “To make peace between people and reconcile them”.  (A: 6; 445 & D: Adab; 50 & Ma: Hosn El-Kholoq; 7)
